Part of the archive is the original signed version of the famous document “Lettera di Raffaello a Leone X”, 1519, which was actually written by Baldassare Castiglione for the artist and which constitutes the founding document of the protection and conservation of Italy's historic and artistic heritage and of article 9 of the Italian Constitution. The letter expresses his despair and pain upon seeing with the degradation of the masterpieces of Ancient Rome due to the carelessness of those, including previous popes, who authorised the use of ancient monuments as quarries and of statues as an ingredient for mortar.
